The landscaping and contemporary architecture of the shingle-roofed villas is based on traditional Balinese principles, utilizing local materials and incorporating the essential elements of Balinese Hindu philosophy and symbolism. The theme is reflected in the grand proportions of the villa, together with the white Palimanan stone walkways and the terracotta brick walls that border them. The villa is entered via a pair of hand-carved wooden garden doors, behind which stands a Balinese Hindu feature known as the ‘aling aling’ , a short screen wall designed to protect the property from troublesome and malign influences, because evil spirits have great difficulty in turning corners.
